Durkheim first developed the concept as part of his attempt to explain suicide, but in terms of criminology it is perhaps more relevant to turn to the work of sociologist Robert Merton, who in America set out to explain the reasons for crime being concentrated in lower-class areas, and in lower-class and minority groups. He also sought to explain why America had such a high crime rate. Merton argued that there was an inequality between culturallyapproved goals in society (an example of a goal is that all men are encouraged to persue success in terms of wealth and status) and the means of achieving those goals (the means of achieving wealth and status, through say education and employment, are not open to everyone).

Qxd 2/15/2006 1:01 PM Page 27 RESEARCH METHODS IN CRIMINOLOGY 27 Ethnography is the study of people and groups in their natural setting, typically involving the researcher spending prolonged periods of time systematically gathering data about their day to day activities, and the meanings that are attached to them. Qualitative research rejects the notion that society and social phenomena can be studied in the same way as natural phenomena. Included in the Chicago School’s ethnographies were studies of homelessness, prostitution and delinquent gangs.

It is generally accepted that qualitative research can offer rich insights into people’s attitudes, beliefs and values and therefore is extremely useful to criminologists. Combined methods Whilst you could now be forgiven for believing that quantitative and qualitative methods are opposed, caution is advised and we must be mindful not to be drawn into thinking that the distinctions between the two are always immediately apparent. While it is true to suggest that some researchers divide the two methods (and themselves) into distinct camps from where they can be very critical of the opposition, many researchers tend to use methods combining quantitative and qualitative analysis, (sometimes in the same research study).
