Having established the boundaries it is important to keep to them. This is easier to do when they have been openly stated at the start. Many dietitians believe that it will take extra time if they get involved in listening to a patient’s personal concerns. However, this need not be the case if the time available has been established at the start. Counsellors who listen deeply to someone’s personal concerns are trained to establish clear time boundaries and to keep to these both for their own well-being and for that of their client.
Keeping to time boundaries can be seen as being strict and authoritarian. The dietitian wants to be friendly and helpful yet she realises that if she gives more time to one patient she will have less with another and may feel guilty about doing this. When this situation persists, resentment, frustration and stress can grow. It is helpful and caring for both the patient and herself if the dietitian keeps clear time boundaries. Clarifying the time available helps the patient feel secure and safe and allows the dietitian to relax knowing that a structure has been formed.
