However, Cher was not in charge. Sonny was the boss, and Cher was happy to let him take the lead. As she later said, “I was delighted for [Sonny] to take care of everything. ” Having gone back to their original names, Sonny and Cher, the singing duo appeared in concerts and on television. Adopting a hippie style, they attracted a wealth of publicity—and fans. Sonny clowned on stage in kooky “mod” outfits: bell-bottom pants, Eskimo boots, and a wild shirt, all covered with a long fur vest and often topped by a knit cap.

In 1966, Bogdanovich had written an unflattering article about Cher and Sonny. Cher noted in her memoirs that she thought the incident was past and gone, but the director, she thought, still harbored ill feelings toward her. She believed that he didn’t like her because she was too “edgy,” as she put it. According to Cher, the director didn’t even like bikers, who are a large part of the film. To understand her role, Cher became friends with Rusty Dennis, whom she regarded as an inspiration and a true heroine.
