The Meeting house and the Community 23 Under some circumstances the principal landholders or proprietors assumed the responsibility of siting a meetinghouse rather than the town or parish body. When the sixty proprietors of Williamstown, Massachusetts, met in 1766 at Lieutenant Benjamin’s tavern, they voted to build a forty-by-thirty-foot meetinghouse in the center of town, leaving it to a committee to ﬁnish the work. Two years later, with the frame still to be raised, an argument over the site arose because certain “men of inﬂuence” had moved into the center or southern part of the town and wished to have the meetinghouse near them.
