3 Although the vision of limpieza de sangre or “pure” whiteness was more easily realized in the largely European-descended population of the United 22 ( 22 ) American Routes States, and much harder to achieve with Latin America’s more heavily African and indigenous populations, in both cases the supremacy of whiteness remained an unassailable ideal despite differences in how it was ultimately defined. 5 But before demographic realities set in, elites in Latin America and the Caribbean expressed a clear desire to keep white blood “pure” by limiting miscegenation and/or by increasing the whiteness of their populations through European migration.

13 As a result of these quite different demographics and immigration strategies, antimiscegenation was easier to enforce in the United States than in Cuba, French St. Domingue, and other parts of Latin America. The force of these demographic realities put Latin American elites in a difficult position. Faced with this situation, what was a modernizing Latin American elite to do? 14 In the nineteenth century, this new stance led to an explicit focus on race mixture as an ameliorative process that improved the society as a whole and moved it toward whiteness.

Attending meetings and events and getting to know members of both groups helped me to better understand the cultural distinctions between Creoles of color and Anglo-blacks, and helped me begin to understand why white Louisianans have, for the most part, stopped calling themselves Creole. White Louisianans told stories of how they or their older family members struggled to make Anglo-Americans understand that one could be both white and Creole. ” At issue in both cases is the fact that the category “Creole,” inherited from French and Spanish–controlled Louisiana, is rooted in Latin/Caribbean racial and cultural understandings that are in conflict with Anglo-American assumptions.
