Chapter 6 analyses the chief patterns of co-operation among villagers both in farming and in other fields of action. There is an element of paradox in such co-operation, since Finnish farmers tend to see themselves as fierce individualists who are poor at collaborating with each other. In fact, they work together a great deal and some even buy machinery together. The chapter explores the important role of trust and choice for their success in this. Less functionally specific patterns of social interaction, such as those involved in visiting and gathering for coffee, are also discussed and are used to highlight the interplay of different and at times conflicting influences and values upon the community and its members.

By the late 1870s the country had also obtained its own official currency in the form of the gold mark. Finnish nationalism was not, however, the only force at work in the political arena during this period. Its most powerful early supporters had been Swedish-speaking intellectuals such as Runeberg, but a new 'Swedish' nationalism also began to develop in its wake.
